He isn't. He was temporarily, at the time, lauded as a hero by people who hate the police, otherwise known as 'career criminals', or 'fuckwits', or 'scum'. Everyone normal thought he was a cunt, and still do.
I didn't see the drama, and won't seek it out, but I'd be very surprised if anyone watching it thought he was being portrayed in anything but a negative light. I'd like to trust the makers of the drama weren't crass and insensitive enough to make a massive bastard look in any way to be heroic.
But nothing surprises me anymore, unfortunately.
