He's a pitcher and a batter. Is also a free agent and baseball players can play on in age, plus he will sell a lot of merch. So what's the problem?
Well, as the BBC article says, he's just had surgery. In fact, in 2018 he had Tommy John surgery, * He's just had further surgery on his UCL, will be able to bat in 2024, but not pitch until 2025:

So the elbow is already a risk and will only get worse. For pitching that is. What effect it will have on his batting is unknown. But I doubt he will manage 10 full seasons without some break.
Even so, the Dodgers will make a lot of the money back, so probably worth the gamble.
* I love the name, Tommy John surgery, named after the pitcher it was first performed on:

Baseball used to be a popular past time in the uk many years ago. It declined after ww2. I imagine it evolved from rounders, one of the few sports I was good at. It v popular in South Korea, cuba and dominican republic also.

Don't know anything about U.S sport. How does that work out in contractual reality?
He isn't really going to be at the club for ten years nor earn that total fee or is he?
Asking for a friend, Enzo.

A lot of deferment. See here and links from it:

There's NFL players who retired years ago still getting paid, as was this Basketball player:
