Winterwatch 1963

Post by VeritasVincit »

Tonight on BBC4 - Winterwatch 1963
About the big freeze-up, which unless you are pretty old you won't remember or even know about.
It was Hell! So bad that the only football I could find to watch was Bury! Desperate times need desperate measures.

Breaking news: it was a bit cold for a while about 50 years ago.

You are referring to Bury's game ? Time and age has faded memeory of the game.
It was so cold, the ground was open to the north - it was hell. I can remember trying to drink hot Bovril and the wind lowing the liquid away from my lips.

The strange thng was that when eventually the thaw arrived and footall re-started, Bury had to postpone a match because the pitch was waterlogged!

Birmingham played Bury in 63 in a cup replay. The first game at St Andrews was abandoned at half time with the score 1-0, wth Jimmy Bloomfield scoring the goal. The game was replayed and the score was 3-3. Bury won the replay 2-0. Was it this game?

The match i went to was January I think, on a Saturday. It was a league match but I can't remember who played.

The Birmingham match at Bury was after the weather relented so think it was March.

It was.

Yeah but Hovisthorpe Athletic beat Clitorial Rovers 87 nil with 6 men in 24 feet of snow in 1785.
I should know, I was the goalpost.
