Re: The Last Film You Watched - Part 4
Based on the 1927 novel Amy Jolly (the on-screen credits state: from the play 'Amy Jolly') by Benno Vigny and adapted by Jules Furthman, the film is about a cabaret singer and a Legionnaire who fall in love during the Rif War, and whose relationship is complicated by his womanizing and the appearance of a rich man who is also in love with her. The film is famous for a scene in which Dietrich performs a song dressed in a man's tailcoat and kisses another woman (to the embarrassment of the latter), both of which were considered scandalous for the period.

The Importance of Being Earnest (1952)
On BBC2 yesterday afternoon. Read the play about 20 years ago but remembered the plot.
Wilde's play is amusing but some of the lines are a bit telegraphed. Enjoyable Sunday afternoon fun. A Carlos 7/10.

Rocky 7/10.
What kind of man are you that I've never seen Rocky! I've seen all the jokes, clips, the running up stairs, ''YO ADRIAN!'' but sitting and watching it all the way through, did that last night. Enjoyed it. It was quite 'indie' to a certain extent ; low budget ; Stallone's acting and slurry bring a few laughs, and there's some poignant scenes about life in general. Apollo's arrogance and him walzting down the ring clearing having done no training and taking the piss was excellent ; even better ending, Rocky would have most likely lost that fight so him to lose on points was perfect. I'm guessing they just keep cheesier, more budget and Hollywood from now on in?

The modern adaptation with Frances O'Connor, Rupert Everett and Colin Firth is excellent too. Looking forward to Oppenheimer, Napoleon and The Killing of Flowers. Godland set in Iceland is another gripping test of faith tale. Watched Sardar Udham an Indian film on Netflix. None of the Bollywood tripe this is a biographical film about the man who killed the former Governor of Punjab Michael O'Dwyer.
And covers the horrific Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919 of an unarmed crowd of men, women and children which O'Dwyer ordered at Amritsar. Got his just desserts.

Film in red, do you mean 'Killers of the Flower Moon'? The new Scorcese/De Niro? It looks interesting as does the Indian film you mentioned.ovechkin8 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 14, 2023 6:37 pmThe modern adaptation with Frances O'Connor, Rupert Everett and Colin Firth is excellent too.
